Wyndmoor

At the southern edge of Springfield Township, Wyndmoor borders Philadelphia’s Chestnut Hill neighborhood. Willow Grove Avenue provides a small cluster of local businesses, while the surrounding streets include modest early-1900s singles, larger stone houses, postwar neighborhoods, townhouses, apartments, and newer construction. Wyndmoor does not fit neatly into one architectural category. Its mix of housing periods and styles, together with its location near the city line, gives buyers a broad range of settings to consider within one community.

Near Chestnut Hill, Distinctly Wyndmoor

Willow Grove Avenue is the closest thing Wyndmoor has to a central business area. It is not a traditional downtown, but it offers neighborhood stops including Captain Andy’s Market, Locals Coffee, Froot, Enza Pizzeria, and The Stotesbury. The stretch is made up mostly of independent businesses, with a smaller number of national brands mixed in. Chestnut Hill’s shops, restaurants, and events are just across the Philadelphia line, providing convenient access to Germantown Avenue. Wyndmoor remains connected to Springfield Township through its schools, parks, library, municipal services, and volunteer organizations.

Parks and Community Spaces

Wyndmoor contains several Springfield Township parks. Mermaid Park is a seven-acre passive recreation area at Elm Street and Mermaid Lane, with a pond, paved walking path, meadow plantings, and open green space. The Springfield Township Rotary Club is working to get it designated an Arboretum, having completed a Level II Tree Assessment. Laurel Beech Park is a 6.5-acre facility on the former Robertson Greenhouses site, backing the Springfield Township Recreation Center, with open space, multi-use fields, and a neighborhood playground. The Township is breaking ground on a new Recreation Center in the spring of 2027 that will service the community with multipurpose rooms and indoor courts. Veterans Park is a six-acre facility with three softball fields, a multi-use field, and a pavilion. Nearby on East Willow Grove Avenue, a memorial dedicated in 1947 honors Springfield Township veterans, with panels added later for Korea and Vietnam. Wyndhill Park, commonly called Elephant Park for its elephant-shaped play structure, offers a tot lot, tennis court, and open green space. The Free Library of Springfield Township and the Township’s municipal offices are located on Paper Mill Road, also a Wyndmoor ZIP code. Wyndmoor Hose Company No. 1, a volunteer fire company serving the community since 1907, remains another visible part of local life along Willow Grove Avenue. It is one of three volunteer fire companies that serve Springfield Township.

From Springfield Village to Wyndmoor

Springfield Township’s history traces Wyndmoor to Penn’s Manor of Springfield, land William Penn gave to his first wife, Gulielma Maria Springett Penn. Before the current name became established, the area was known at different times as Bungtown, Spring Village or Springfield Village, and Tedyuscung. The origin of the name Wyndmoor is not completely settled. Township history records two commonly repeated accounts: one connects the name to the Heebner family, which donated land for a Reading Railroad station, while another links it to the nearby estate of Randal Morgan. Over time, Wyndmoor replaced Springfield Village as the name for the community east of Stenton Avenue. Wyndmoor’s estate-era architecture includes Ropsley, designed by the Philadelphia firm Mellor, Meigs & Howe and built from 1916 to 1918 for Sun Oil executive Francis McIlhenny at 8765 Montgomery Avenue. The house, known locally as the Poe House, still stands as a single-family residence. McIlhenny’s widow later married Edgar Allan Poe of Baltimore, a grand-nephew of the writer. Another surviving estate is Guildford. Originally called Lane’s End, the house was designed by architect Robert Rodes McGoodwin and completed in 1925. Louise Elkins Sinkler and her husband Wharton Sinkler purchased the property in 1945 and renamed it Guildford. McGoodwin modeled the house on Sutton Place in Guildford, Surrey, and incorporated architectural fragments and rooms salvaged from English buildings. The University of Pennsylvania later operated the property as a conference center before it returned to private ownership. Whitemarsh Hall occupied a 300-acre Wyndmoor estate owned by investment banker Edward T. Stotesbury. Designed by Philadelphia architect Horace Trumbauer, the 147-room mansion was one of the area’s most elaborate country houses. The property was later divided for residential development, and the mansion was demolished in 1980. Columns, statuary, and other remnants can still be found within the neighborhood. The Springfield Township Historical Society identifies its loss as an impetus for the Society’s founding in 1985.

Laverock and the Springfield Panhandle

Wyndmoor is the primary community in this corner of Springfield Township, but the nearby areas of Laverock and the Springfield Panhandle are also part of the story. Laverock is a small residential area divided between Springfield and Cheltenham townships. On the Springfield side, Laverock Farm was transformed beginning in 1919 by architect Arthur Meigs into a French-inspired working estate for the Newbold family. The estate was demolished in the mid-1950s, and much of the land was redeveloped for housing. Because Laverock crosses a municipal boundary and shares the 19038 ZIP code with nearby communities, a Laverock or Glenside mailing address does not always establish the township, school district, or tax jurisdiction. Buyers should verify each property through municipal and parcel records. The Springfield panhandle is the Township’s narrow western extension around Northwestern Avenue and Ridge Pike. Camp Shelly Ridge sits within the panhandle on Manor Road but carries a Lafayette Hill and Miquon 19444 mailing address. Founded in 1963, the camp is home to the Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania council headquarters and includes lodges, an activity center, and a swimming pool. Also nearby in Springfield Township, Morris Arboretum & Gardens’ Bloomfield Farm occupies a 67-acre site on East Northwestern Avenue, and the National Register-listed Springfield Mill stands on the same tract. The mill is one of the oldest functioning grist mills in the state. The Township does not publish a formal boundary definition for the panhandle, so these sites are better identified by their Springfield Township location rather than by a neighborhood label. The area’s unusual boundaries are another reminder that neighborhood names, postal addresses, and municipal lines do not always align. Parcel-level verification is important when comparing schools, taxes, and municipal services.

Schools and Transportation

Wyndmoor is served by the School District of Springfield Township: Enfield Elementary (grades K-2), Erdenheim Elementary (grades 3-5), Springfield Middle School (grades 6-8), and Springfield High School (grades 9-12). The two elementary campuses are located in Erdenheim and Flourtown. The nearby Wyndmoor station is on SEPTA’s Chestnut Hill East Line and provides service toward Center City. Despite its name, the station is just across the city line in Philadelphia. SEPTA Routes 51 and 77 also serve Wyndmoor and the surrounding area; schedules should be checked before travel.
